Why is My Whirlpool Duet Dryer Not Spinning?

A typical day can mean crossing as much as possible off the to-do list. But checking off laundry is more difficult when you load wet clothes into the dryer and find the dryer drum not turning. From a broken drive belt to worn support rollers, we’ll troubleshoot some reasons why you observe a Whirlpool Duet dryer not spinning.

3 Reasons Why You Have A Whirlpool Duet Dryer Not Spinning

When your Whirlpool duet dryer won’t spin there are typically specific reasons why. We’ll troubleshoot some common problems and their solutions so your laundry is one less thing to do.

Broken Drive Belt

The drive belt works hard for your dryer, suspended between two pulleys as it actually spins the drum with the motor. Given the weight and motion on the drive belt, it can fray, tear or break with time or overly heavy loads. When this happens, you’ll notice your Whirlpool Duet dryer not spinning.

To test the drive belt, try to turn the dryer drum by hand. If it spins very easily, the drive belt is likely broken and will need to be replaced.

Worn Drum Support Rollers

Another reason you may have a Whirlpool Duet dryer not tumbling could be due to worn drum support rollers. These rollers are typically located in the rear of the dryer drum and help hold the drum in place as it turns. As the support rollers become worn with time, you may notice the dryer making thumping noises.

To test for worn drum support rollers, the dryer belt needs to be removed. If the drum doesn’t rotate easily without the dryer belt, it’s likely one or more of the rollers are worn and needs replacement. We suggest replacing both rollers at the same time.

Damaged Idler Pulley

Another cause for a Whirlpool Duet dryer not spinning? Oftentimes, it’s the idler pulley. This is one of the pulleys that suspend the drive belt, providing it with tension as it helps spin the drum. As with the drive belt, the idler pulley can become worn with time or damaged by overly heavy loads.

If the idler pulley doesn’t spin freely on its shaft or appears damaged, it needs to be replaced.
